Appconf Sets the App Name

  • Status: Approved (2026-09-22) by: @clsource

Problem

The installed/launcher app name is hardcoded ("Jasonelle") in the Xcode and Android projects. The appconf tool patches only the application identifier (app_id). It should also set the app name from the merged config.jsonc via a new app_name key, on both platforms.

Decision

  • App name comes from app_name in the merged config.jsonc. It is optional: empty or missing means only app_id is patched, so existing configs keep working.

  • iOS uses INFOPLIST_KEY_CFBundleDisplayName (shown under the icon) added to the Application target’s Debug and Release build blocks only. PRODUCT_NAME = "$(TARGET_NAME)" is left untouched so the bundle stays Application.app and the test TEST_HOST paths keep working.

  • Android uses android:label in AndroidManifest.xml (the launcher name).

  • Both patches are idempotent and follow the existing strictness: unexpected marker counts fail rather than guess.

Changes

tools/appconf/src/main.go

  • Read app_name beside app_id.

  • applyXcodeDisplayName: anchor on the Application bundle-id line (PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = <app_id>;, the empty-suffix one, exactly 2 occurrences), then per block: no-op if "<app_name>" is already set, replace another value, else insert the line after the bundle-id line.

  • applyAndroidLabel: android:label="…" must appear exactly once; replace its value (no-op if equal).

  • New --android-manifest flag defaulting to build/android/sources/Application/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml.

Fixtures (stock + renamed Xcode, Android manifest), idempotency, wrong-count errors, and the end-to-end TestRun/TestRunNoName cases.

Documentation

  • tools/appconf/README.md and the Antora modules/tools/pages/appconf.adoc page document the app name under the identifier rewrites.

Non-goals

  • No PRODUCT_NAME change.

  • No changes to lib/common/config/config.jsonc (app_name already added).

  • No gen tool changes (its defaults already resolve).

Testing

go test ./… in tools/appconf/src, plus rebuilding the appconf dist binaries with task appconf.build and a full task gen.
